New Core Humanitarian Standards

Exciting news – the Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS) have been updated. The CHS set global standards for quality and accountability in Humanitarian Action. The new version has become more people-centred, user-friendly and accessible, highlighting Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) as well as inclusion for people with disabilities. Visit https://www.corehumanitarianstandard.org/ to learn more and download the booklet in English, French and other languages.

Highlights from inclusive humanitarian action

The Disability Reference Group (DRG) consists of organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and UN agencies, interagency networks, multilateral and bilateral agencies, private sector, academics and others committed to promoting inclusion of persons with disabilities in humanitarian action. Their February newsletter highlights:

  • An article on the evaluation of the Washington Group Questions,

  • A list of donors for rapid response,

  • And a link to the online learning tool – Introduction to Inclusive Humanitarian Action.

All previous editions of the monthly newsletter can be accessed here: https://www.internationaldisabilityalliance.org/content/drg-newsletters

Uncover systemic discriminatory practices and counteract gender-based violence

There is a high incidence and prevalence of gender-based violence among women and girls with disabilities, which can only be understood through an intersectional lens. This is why Light for the World and Girl Child Rights, with funding from the Austrian Development Agency have developed a practical tool: the intersectional discrimination pyramid. By exploring sexism and ableism, the tool explains how and why the intersection of gender and disability results in higher risk of gender-based violence among women and girls with disabilities. At community level, it can be used to identify and counteract gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities. The tool will also be translated into Portuguese – thus keep on checking our website.

Study: Out of school experiences of youth with disabilities

A newly published study provides insight into the experiences of youth with disabilities who dropped out of school earlier than desired. The participatory research was conducted in Ethiopia, Ghana and South Africa and shows, youth with disabilities had similar experiences related to social, environmental, and health barriers. The main factor leading to school dropout was “the loss of key social support networks and relationships”. The study concludes with recommendations on ethics of care and attentiveness.
